The administration, in a meeting held on Wednesday, said that the Phase-I works for strengthening and safety of Ambazari dam as directed by the High Court were completed. For the Phase-II, it was stated, the plan involving expenditure of Rs 21 crore has been prepared. Vijayalakshmi Bidari, Divisional Commissioner, who chairs the high-level committee appoibted by State Government recently, asked the agencies concerned to ensure that the works in Phase-II of the plan were completed on priority and in time. She said that the strengthening of the retaining wall of the Ambazari dam was necessary. “The priority will be decided for various works in accordance with the dam safety regulations. Under this, encroachments obstructing the flow of water from the reservoir will be removed. The main wall will be strengthened. Deepening of nullah, increasing the height of bridge and other works are also to be done.
In the meeting, the senior officers deliberated upon installing gates at the dams to release water, as suggested by Maharashtra Engineering Research Institute, Nashik. For the works, Water Resources Department has published tender and the execution of the strengthening works will start accordingly. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) was asked to remove hurdles on the land in possession of Maha Metro and Nagpur Improvement Trust, before the onset of monsoon. It was decided to take stock of the progress of the works on a regular basis. A report regarding the progress of the works will be submitted to the High Court by the committee.
The next meeting of the committee is scheduled to be held on January 24. Bidari asked the officers of NMC, Water Resources Department, Nagpur Improvement Trust, and Maha Metro to submit report regarding the measures taken by them for strengthening of Ambazari dam.
