In a significant breakthrough notorious gangster Tapan Sarkar, linked to the heinous murder of a youth in Khursipar, Bhilai, back in March last year has been nabbed by the law enforcement. Police sources revealed that Tapan Sarkar, a 52-year-old resident of Akash Nagar, Sikolabhata, Durg, was allegedly orchestrating an extortion racket, with the murder in question being a tragic outcome of this criminal enterprise. According to the investigation, on March 8, 2023, at approximately 12:30 pm, Shubham Rajput was brutally stabbed multiple times by accused Sevakram Nishad, succumbing to his injuries despite immediate medical attention.
 
Sevakram Nishad, arrested shortly after the incident, implicated Tapan Sarkar in the murder during his confession, shedding light on a monetary dispute between the victim and the gangster. Following his arrest, Tapan Sarkar was presented in the district court on Monday and subsequently remanded to judicial custody. Rajkumar Tiwari, defense lawyer, informed this newspaper that Tapan Sarkar had a prior conviction in the Mahadev murder case of Bhilai, which was upheld by the High Court. However, he was granted bail by the Apex Court, considering a detention period of over 16 years in jail. Sarkar had secured bail in another case during that time.
 
ASP (City) Abhishek Jha, addressing the media, highlighted the extensive efforts made to apprehend Tapan Sarkar, who had been constantly changing hideouts to evade arrest. Specially constituted police teams conducted raids in Durg, Bhilai, Raipur, Bilaspur, Nagpur, Mumbai, and Bhubaneshwar, ultimately succeeding in arresting Sarkar from a farmhouse in Jonda village, Champaran, Raipur.
