IN A tragic incident, a nine-year-old boy fell into the canal near Mahadula T-point in Koradi area while trying to catch a kite and was washed away on Wednesday afternoon. Body of Dayashankar Awdhesh Prajapati (9), a resident of Mahadula, could not be traced till late evening. A Standard III student of Vidya Mandir Koradi High School, Mahadula, Dayashankar and his elder brother Kailash (13) were trying to catch a kite around 1 pm. Suddenly, they slipped into the canal near Mahadula T-point, a few metres from Sheetla Mata Mandir. A few bystanders, somehow, managed to pull out Kailash from the canal but his younger brother Dayashankar washed away. Soon, the news spread like a jungle fire in Mahadula and nearby localities. A huge crowd gathered at the spot. Staff from Koradi Police Station led by Senior PI Vijay Naik arrived at the spot.

Senior police officers requested ace diver Jagdish Khare, who has been engaged in rescuing drowning persons from Gandhisagar Lake, to visit and retrieve Dayashankar’s body. Khare arrived and started a search for the body in the canal. However, he along with other local divers suspended the search after sunset. Police personnel told ‘The Hitavada’ that the canal is covered with slab up to three kilometres and diverted into two parts. The divers searched one of the parts but could not find the body. The search in the second part of the canal will resume tomorrow, they added.
