AFTER almost three decades, Nagpur District Football Association (NDFA) will be playing host to the Western India Football Association’s State Inter-District Football Championship. Addressing a press conference, Haresh Vora, President, NDFA and Vice-President WIFA said that the inter-district meet will be held at two venues in Nagpur from January 29. “NDFA will be hosting the tournament at its Dr Ambedkar Football Stadium in Suyog Nagar and South East Central Railways Motibagh Stadium,” stated Vora.
 
Nagpur is the defending champions and will direct play the quarter-finals along with last year’s runners-up Mumbai, Pune and Kolhapur. “Total 35 district football teams of Maharashtra will be vying for the top honours. The winner of the tournament will get Rs 31,000 while the runners-up will get Rs 21,000 along with trophies. The prize money might be increased,” said Vora.
 
The tournament will be inaugurated by Salim Baig, NDFA Advisory Committee Chairman along with Ashok Anand Koli, Senior Inspector, Kapil Nagar. WIFA Secretary Kiran Chougale, treasurer Salim Parkute will also remain present during the inauguration ceremony. “During this tournament, players will be spotted who will attend the trials of Santosh Trophy and will participate in the final selection trials. India footballer Abdul Khalique and former Santosh Trophy player Mohd Iliyas will be the ‘spotters’ for this district championship,” mentioned Vora.
