Once again veteran Congress leader and MP Digvijay Singh has raised the issue of EVM tampering and compromised functioning of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in State capital. Like other opposition parties e.g. Aam Admi Party (AAP), This time Congress leader came up with a team of technicians and put up evidence before the media persons in support of his claim. He also refuted the Election Commission’s statement of free and fair elections and EVM can’t be hacked. On Wednesday, the leader enacted a demo with the help of technicians and alleged that its system is not foolproof. He asked the mediapersons to cast their demo vote pressing a button. It was seen that the button was pressed for ‘Banana’ symbol and the slip came out in favour of ‘Apple’ symbol.
There were 10 such rounds of experiments, but the results were not as per the voters’ action. Slamming the Election Commission for turning blind eye towards the EVM and VVPAT issue, he said, “The election process is under the control of software developers and installation teams. In a country with a population of 140 crore where there are 90 crore voters, should we give the right to decide all this in the hands of such people?” Highlighting technical scope for manipulation, he said that VVPAT is not operated by chip, in fact it works with a control device. “VVPAT was introduced when voting machines were under scanner. VVPAT consists of a ballot, there is no chip. It works with software which contains the name of the candidate with his party’s symbol. Ballot unit is connected to the control unit. After casting a vote, it goes through the control unit and it is controlled by the software developer and installer.” If we say something, the ECI issues notice but the same logic is not followed against leaders of BJP. Singh alleged that there would be no democracy after 2024.
We don’t trust the VVPAT or EVMs, he added. Citing examples of other countries e.g. Australia, he demanded to bring VVPAT in public domain. “Why not put VVPATs in public domain on the lines of Australia? Today, there are five countries in the world where voting is done with EVMs. It is in the public domain.” He made serious allegations against the Election Commission also saying it is not impartial. It has turned blind eye to EVM and VVPAT malfunctioning despite repeated requests. I have seen the era of T N Seshan Saheb during my tenure as Chief Minister and expecting impartiality from the Election Commission.”
