Dattary alias Rajdutt, 90 years-old veteran Marathi film director from Amravati, has been awarded Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, while two other personalities of region, Dr Chandras-hekhar Meshram and Shankar Baba Papalkar have been honoured with Padma Shri. While Rajdutt is awarded for his films on patriotism and social issues for over six decades in the field of arts, while Dr Meshram gets it in Medicine category while Papalkar for social work. The names were announced by Union Government on the eve of Republic Day. Rajdutt, a native of Amravati, found fame in Mumbai where he worked as a leading Director of Marathi films. He was well known for directing films on patriotism and social issues.
While Dr Meshram is a well-known figure in the field of Neurology in the region, Papalkar’s area of work is in Amravati district where he runs a centre for destitutes children at Wazzar. The coveted awards recognised the sterling work of the two personalities. Dr Meshram is a leading figure in the field of Neurology and is famous throughout the world. The eminent Neurologist is known for championing brain health awareness, extensive contributions to Neurological education and research, said the citation.
As to Papalkar, the 81-year-old social workers, has devoted his life for welfare and rehabilitation of Divyang, orphaned and destitute children. He runs an Ashram devoted to destitute children at Wazzar in Amravati District. Dr Meshram is an world renowned expert in the field of Neurology and was also first Indian to be elected as Trustee of World Federation of Neurology and also President of Tropical Neurology Group of World Federation of Neurology.
Papalkar is Director Ambadaspant Vaidya Matimand, Mukhbadhir, Bewaras Balgriha and through it he has ensured rehabilitation of over 125 children.
