A major blast at Sunflag Iron and Steel Company in Warthi has left three staffers badly burnt while five others sustained minor injuries. The blast took place around 3.15 am. The badly injured have been shifted to Nagpur for treatment. Fortunately, there was no casualty in the incident. The steel-producing Sunflag Company is located at Warthi in Mohadi tehsil of Bhandara. Around 3.15 am on Tuesday, when the workers were busy working in the night shift, there was a sudden blast in the electric arc furnace (EAF).
Hot molten metal splashed out from the furnace.
Three staffers came in direct contact of the extreme heat that came along with the splash and they sustained burns. After primary treatment at the company’s facility, they were immediately sent to Suretech Hospital at Nagpur. They staffers include Namdeo Zanzad (57), engineer Sagar Jamane (28) and contractual worker Bhavesh Hatwar (30). The hospital is said to have informed the company officials that the burns were superficial. Also, five other workers who sustained minor burns were given discharge after administering first aid.
Meanwhile, the effect of the blast was so severe that the entire area felt the jitters. People residing in the vicinity woke up from sleep on hearing the loud noise and soon panic spread among them. The company unit has also suffered heavy damage and loss because of the blast. Warathi Police Station’s Incharge Abhijit Patil said that since the said incident comes under Industrial Safety. Further investigation will be conducted by Director, Industrial Health and Safety Department. Sources informed that Deputy Director of Industrial Health and Safety Department Dhanvijay visited the spot and gathered information about the incident after discussing with officers, workers and related parties.
