Tika Ram Dewangan, a 40-year-old Deputy Collector serving in Kanker, exemplifies the power of determination and resilience. Born with a 50% disability, he refused to let his physical impairment define his destiny. Instead, he carved his own path through sheer perseverance and hard work, becoming a symbol of inspiration for many, especially the youth. Hailing from the humble village Pantora Balauda in District Janjgir Champa, Tika Ram’s early life was fraught with challenges. His father, a small farmer who also worked as a weaver, struggled to make ends meet, leaving the family in financial distress. Despite these difficulties, Tika Ram was undeterred. He was a meritorious student, excelling in both his 10th and 12th board exams with distinction, proving that his potential was boundless. However, it wasn’t an easy journey. “I was often mocked for my disability by my classmates during school days,” Tika Ram recalls. “But instead of letting it affect me, I decided to focus on my studies and career. My aim was clear—I wanted to be a civil servant.” After completing his schooling, Tika Ram set his sights on cracking the prestigious Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission (CGPSC) examination.

Without any guidance or coaching, he embarked on the difficult path of self-study. His dedication was evident as he balanced his academic pursuits, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biology (B.Sc.) and a Master’s degree in Sociology (M.A.), all while preparing for multiple competitive examinations. In 2005, Tika Ram achieved his first milestone by clearing the exam for a government school teacher varg III. He later advanced to varg II and taught in some of the most remote areas of the state, including Sarkho and Shivni. Even in these secluded regions, where basic amenities were scarce, he continued his self-study. His resolve remained unshaken despite facing setbacks. After clearing the preliminary exams of the SSC Graduate level exams three times, he was unable to pass the mains. In 2011, Tika Ram’s efforts bore fruit once again when he was selected for the position of office assistant at the Chhattisgarh Rajya Grameen Bank (CRGB). However, the demanding nature of his banking job did not deter him from his larger goal. “The banker’s job was hectic, and I often found myself exhausted, both mentally and physically. But I would still prepare for CGPSC exams late into the night. Even while waiting at train stations or traveling by bus, I would have my books with me,” he recounts. His tireless dedication eventually paid off, and during his tenure at the bank, he successfully cleared the CGPSC prelims.

“The mains exam was a tough nut to crack, but I left no stone unturned in preparing for it after fulfilling my bank duties,” he adds. In 2013, Tika Ram achieved his lifelong dream—he cracked the CGPSC exam and became a Naib Tehsildar, an executive magistrate. “It was a dream come true. I never allowed my disability to stand in the way of my aspirations. Though I had secured government jobs as a teacher and a banker, I always remained focused on my ultimate goal of becoming a civil servant,” he says with pride.

Over the years, Tika Ram has served in various capacities across the state, including postings in Wadrafnagar, Baikunthpur, Pithoura, and Devbhog. Known for his strong administrative skills, he continues to serve as a dedicated and diligent officer. Beyond his professional achievements, Tika Ram also shines in other arenas. A talented chess player, he participated in national-level inter-university chess championships during his university days. More recently, he represented State in All India Civil Service Chess Tournament. Tika Ram Dewangan’s journey is a reminder that no obstacle is too great for those who possess determination and perseverance.
