Nagpur airport to get a facelift; Maharashtra to have 10 new medical colleges, including one each at Amravati, Gadchiroli, Buldhana, Washim and Bhandara
APPRECIATING the initiatives taken by the Maharashtra Government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, said, “Never before in Maharashtra’s history has such rapid and largescale development occurred across so many sectors.” Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for various development projects in Maharashtra worth more than Rs 7,600 crore. This included the upgradation and modernisation of Nagpur’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport as well as operationalisation of Government Medical colleges in Amravati, Buldhana, Washim, Bhandara and Gadchiroli. It may be mentioned that GMR Airports Limited (GAL) will upgrade, develop and operate the Nagpur airport.
Those present during the off-line programme held at the airport premises at Nagpur included Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Principal Secretary General Administration Sanjay Sethi, Vice-Chairperson and Managing Director of Maharashtra Airport Development Company Swati Pandey, District Collector Dr Vipin Itankar, MLCs Krupal Tumane, Dr Parinay Fuke and Pravin Datke, MLA Adv Ashish Jaiswal, MLA Mohan Mate, exMLA Ashish Deshmukh, Business Chairman – Airports, GMR Group G B S Raju, Executive Director SGK Kishor and others. Modi further said, “Development projects worth thousands of crores have been launched in various districts,with metro expansions in several cities, airport upgrades taking place in some locations, and road and highway-related projects progressing rapidly. Projects related to infrastructure, solar energy, and textile parks have been initiated. New initiatives have been taken for the benefit of farmers and livestock owners.” “Today, major countries around the world see India as a significant hub of human resources.

That is why we are equipping our youth with skills according to global standards,” PM Modi said. Manasi Sontakke compered the programme proceedings while Secretary of Medical Education Dinesh Waghmare proposed a vote of thanks. Agriculture, Tourism sectors will take a big leap: Gadkari UNION Minister Nitin Gadkari praised the efforts made by Devendra Fadnavis. He expressed that the Agriculture and Tourism sectors in Vidarbha will take a big leap. About 68,000 jobs have been created due to expansion of MIHAN, he added. GMR Airports Ltd embarks on planned development GMR Airports Limited (GAL) is embarking on a plan for phased development that will enhance the Nagpur airport’s ultimate capacity to 30 million passengers annually, positioning it as a key airport. This transformation is set to not only enhance connectivity within the Vidarbha region but also strengthen its economic infrastructure. GAL’s commitment to modernising and expanding the airport includes a significant boost in cargo handling capabilities – increasing the capacity to 20,000 metric tons.
This development will establish Nagpur as a logistics hub, driving regional trade and fueling economic growth across Central India. The first phase of this transformation includes enhancing the passenger terminal capacity to 4 million passengers annually. This ambitious project will also involve upgrading existing infrastructure, building a modern cargo terminal, and improving airside facilities with a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower. Another significant milestone was achieved onTuesday as GMR Nagpur International Airport Ltd. (GNIAL, a 100% subsidiary of GAL) and MIHAN India Limited executed the concession agreement for the project. Raju said, “With our proven track record of transforming aviation infrastructure in India and overseas, GMR is committed to delivering a world-class airport at Nagpur. The airport will serve as a global gateway, reflecting Nagpur’s status as an emerging economic hub. This development aligns with honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision to drive India’s aviation growth and the Government of Maharashtra's commitment to building world-class infrastructure. .The Nagpur Airport project is expected not only to improve connectivity, passenger experience and set new benchmarks in India’s aviation sector but also become the economic growth engine for the state of Maharashtra.”
