IPS Manoj Sharma, the real-life hero behind the Bollywood film ‘12th Fail’, visited the Nalanda campus in the capital on Wednesday evening, where he spent time exploring various sections of the institution, including the library, Takshila, and Kala Kendra. Currently serving as Inspector General on central deputation with the CISF, Manoj Sharma’s life story, depicted in the popular biopic, has resonated with countless young people across the country. Upon his arrival at the campus, he was warmly welcomed by a group of officials including Collector Dr Gaurav Singh, SSP Santosh Singh, Raipur Municipal Corporation Commissioner Abinash Mishra, and the Chief Executive Officer of the District Panchayat.

As a gesture of respect, Dr Singh presented him with a shawl, while SSP Santosh Singh gifted him literature based on the works of Swami Vivekananda. Sharma toured the first and second floors of the Nalanda library, where he was briefed by Collector Dr Singh on the process of issuing books, a system that Sharma praised. Moved by the sight of so many students studying diligently, he wrote in the visitor’s book, “I have never seen such a good library, where so many students are working hard together.”

He encouraged the students to make full use of this valuable resource, offering them heartfelt best wishes for their future. During his visit to the Takshila Library and the Art Center, IPS Manoj Sharma gathered information on a range of topics, from musical instruments to painting, while observing the recording studio and other facilities. Dr Singh provided a detailed overview of the various centers, and a teacher at the Art Center played a soulful flute piece, which deeply touched Sharma. He commented that the Art Center could be developed into a cultural hub similar to those in metropolitan cities like Mumbai. Addressing the students, IPS Manoj Sharma shared insights from his own life, emphasising the importance of hard work and perseverance.

He encouraged the youth to never give up on their dreams and to remain committed to their goals. The film 12th Fail, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, is based on the book chronicling Manoj Sharma’s inspiring journey. Set against the backdrop of his early education in a village in Chambal, the film highlights a pivotal moment when cheating in exams was rampant. During one particular examination, an SDM unexpectedly arrived for inspection, halting the widespread malpractice, and as a result, Manoj failed. It was at this moment that he made a life-changing decision: he would never cheat again and would instead strive for excellence in the civil services. Manoj Sharma’s determination and integrity have made him a role model for millions of young people across India, inspiring them to pursue their dreams with honesty and dedication.
