Suicide note revealed cheating case as motive for the mass suicide

Depressed over implication of his son in a cheating case, a retired teacher and three members of his family committed suicide at their rented house in Mowad village, Narkhed tehsil, in the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. The deceased have been identified as Vijay Madhukar Pachori (68), his wife Mala (55), and their two sons — Ganesh (38) and Deepak (36). Pachoris were living in a rented house owned by Omprakash Khobragade. Vijay retired as a teacher in 2016 while Deepak was preparing for competitive exams. According to police, neighbours, noticing the unusual silence, and the air-cooler in the house running till 9 am, alerted the landlord who peeked through a window. He was shocked to find the dangling bodies inside. He immediately alerted the police. Staff from Narkhed Police Station rushed to the scene. The police forced open the door and found the bodies of Vijay, Mala, Ganesh, and Deepak suspended from the ceiling hook with ropes in separate rooms.

Vijay and Mala were found hanging in a room while Ganesh and Deepak hanged themselves in separate rooms. The bodies were removed and laid on the ground. During a physical examination, the police recovered a suicide note from Ganesh’s pocket. The note, signed by all four family members, stated that they were depressed due to Ganesh’s involvement in a cheating case and had decided to end their lives. Further investigation revealed that Ganesh, the elder son, was operating a society named Matru Seva Nidhi Ltd in Pandhurna, Madhya Pradesh. He used to stay there and visit his family in Nagpur for three to four days a month. Shailesh Bilgiye and Keshav Bhade were also Directors of the society. A cheating case of Rs 2 lakh was registered against Ganesh, Shailesh and Keshav at Pandhurna Police Station in February this year. The trio was arrested. Later, Ganesh was released on bail. The police recorded statement of Shailesh Bilgiye, who claimed that he had not met Ganesh since his arrest.
The Pachori family’s relatives told the police that the family appeared depressed but showed no signs of the extreme act. Dr Harssh Poddar, Superintendent of Police (SP) Nagpur Rural, stated that the case appeared to be a suicide and there were no signs of external injuries on the bodies. However, Dr Poddar mentioned that the final course of investigation would be determined after receiving the post-mortem report. Narkhed Police have registered a case of accidental death and started investigations into the matter.

Neighbours claim no unusual activity
A woman neighbour told the police that she spoke to Mala on Tuesday night when she came to return a utensil. She appeared calm and normal. The neighbour expressed shock that the entire family took the extreme step without showing any signs of distress.
