There is good news for wildlife lovers of Madhya Pradesh. After the Cheetah project, the State Govt is now preparing to settle one-horned rhinoceroses in the State. Forest Department officials and a team of wildlife experts are looking for a favorable habitat for them. Help has also been sought from the Wildlife Institute of Dehradun for this. Forest Department officials have also written an official letter to the Wildlife Institute. The plan to bring rhinoceros to Madhya Pradesh is an old one. Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav had directed the officers for this in June.

The CM had asked the officers present in the meeting of Madhya Pradesh State Forest Board to prepare a detailed action plan. After which the departmental officers have started looking for a suitable habitat for rhinoceros. Actually, rhinoceros is included in the category of endangered animals. Their number is decreasing rapidly all over the world. According to a media report, only 4,000 rhinoceros are left in the world. Out of these, 2900 are found in India. More than 2500 rhinoceros are found in the forests of Assam alone. But due to the shrinking forest area, a situation of conflict arises between them.

Rhinos in only three states

At present, rhinoceroses are available only in three states of India, namely Assam, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. They are present in Kaziranga National Park, Orang National Park, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Dibu Saikhowa National Park Dibrugarh, Manas National Park of Assam. Apart from Assam, rhinoceroses are also found in Dudhwa National Park of Uttar Pradesh and Gorumara National Park and Jaldapara National Park of West Bengal. Rhinos are present only in Dudhwa National Park of Uttar Pradesh.
