Nehru Nagar's Bhelwa Pond has long been a popular attraction in the city, admired for its natural beauty. Thousands of residents visit the area daily for morning and evening walks, drawn by the serene pond, the trees lining its banks, and the ducks and geese playing in the water. Additionally, Bhilai Municipal Corporation has installed an open gym nearby, where locals exercise regularly. However, recent incidents of vandalism by miscreants have caused concern. Lights installed by the corporation have been deliberately broken at night, and the fencing around the pond has been damaged. In response, the Nehru Nagar Residents’ Association, along with Ward corporator Chandreshwari Bandhe, raised these issues, demanding that the area be restored.

 

When BMC Commissioner Bajrang Dubey was made aware of the situation, he immediately ordered measures to improve security and maintenance at the pond. This includes increasing police patrols during morning and evening hours, improving cleanliness, and fixing the damaged lights. The zone commissioner has been instructed to ensure the lighting is repaired, and further maintenance work will begin soon. Both ward corporator, Chandreshwari Bandhe and Nehru Nagar Residents' Association member Devendra Bhatia expressed satisfaction with the improved cleanliness efforts. They also called for the appointment of a security guard to monitor the area, with the responsibility of opening and closing the gates at designated times to prevent the entry of miscreants. With these actions, the Bhelwa Pond is expected to regain its charm and continue being a peaceful retreat for the city’s residents.
