Alarming Situation

‘Drugs spoiling youth, leading to harassment of women’

After Ganja found in an ambulance, MD worth Rs 3 crore seized on Friday

On Friday, police seized (mephedrone) MD drug worth Rs 3 crores in Ratlam. Its not new to arrest accused from Ratlam and Mandsaur in connection with drug cases. More important is how gradually the drugs racket spreading its tentacles in the State. In another incident, ambulance was used to transport Ganja into the State. Speed with which the drug abuse is causing societal menace, our efforts are not enough. It can’t be left with police alone. Comprehensive approach is required besides public representative, government should take a lead and family, society and education institutions should also need to be vigilant and active in this matter. How deeply drugs, especially in western parts of the State, are spoiling our youth and leads to the harassment of women. Extent can be gauged with the fact that during BJP’s membership drive in Indore, a group of women took to the streets and asked Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya expressing fear over the rampant trade of intoxicants and involvement of their children in huge number. The people did not leave the venue till Minister assured them.
later He has given three days ultimatum to police to act.

Vijayvargiya urged the police to take stringent action against drug users. He said, “Hang the people who consume drugs. Drug addiction should be stopped completely. Our mothers and sisters are the most troubled. People take drugs and tease girls.” It was the thing some around a week ago. In Bhopal too, police can pat its back as the case of arrested people and amount of drugs seized is increasing almost daily.
Talking to ‘The Hitavada’, police official said that there is huge rise in the quantity of seized narcotic substance in last one year. As per the Police Department, in first six months of last year it had seized 40 kgs of drugs while this year it has arose to 252 kg in the corresponding period, remarkable hike of 500 %.
But it must be underlined that peddlers have changed the trade in the State capital as per the information suggest not only source have been changed moreover type of drug is also changed. After Rajasthan, UP now Odisha has been included in this list from where these smugglers are purchasing drugs from.

In last three years, police arrested over 150 smugglers around State capital. Police seized 138 kg of ganja that had been brought to State from Odisha in an ambulance last week. The consignment was brought from Odisha to Indore to send it to other parts of the State. The ambulance was registered in Andhra Pradesh and was being
used for inter-state smuggling of ganja. According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), cases registered for drug trafficking for the year 2020, 21-2022 in Madhya Pradesh are 1,644, 1,959 and 2,169 respectively. At the same time, it shows how this trap is spreading its web in the State. It is the high time to strategies battle at top level before situation could become out of control.

What the authority says?
India is the largest producer and exporter of Opium in the world. The opium poppy is being cultivated in 22 districts of MP, UP and Rajasthan under the licenses granted by the Central Government. In MP, licenses for the cultivation of Opium are given in all the 3 districts of Ujjain range namely Mandsaur, Ratlam and Neemuch.
The licensed farmers are required to surrender the entire produce to the Government. However, given the price difference between what the Government pays and the price Opium fetches in the illicit market, a portion of legally produced opium is diverted to illicit channels. Substantial portion of this diverted opium is converted into Smack/Heroin in the makeshift labs in and around opium growing areas.
