A man went berserk and bludgeoned two people to death with a wooden plank, seriously injuring two others, while they were sleeping on a platform at Nagpur Railway Station on Monday morning.
The unprovoked attack occurred in the early hours of the day on platform number 6 and caused a sensation among passengers. It also raised questions about the effectiveness of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), which is tasked with safeguarding railway property and passengers.
The police have arrested Jairam Ramawatar Kewat (45), a resident of Haidarpur, District Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh. A deceased has been identified as Ganesh Kumar D (52), a resident of Viranpatti, Dindigul, Tamil Nadu.
An unidentified beggar also died in the attack. Among the two injured persons, one is serious and unconscious while another man, a resident of Nagpur, recuperated after the medical treatment in the night. Police claimed that Kewat is not sound mentally and is giving uncertain answers to the police during interrogation. The tranquility of the railway station was shattered by sounds of screams that sent shivers down the spines of passengers at 4 am. Ganesh was sleeping on a concrete bench and a beggar was sleeping near the bench. Dinesh Meshram, a resident of Badnera, Amravati, was around 10 meters away from Ganesh. Their slumber was disturbed by a sudden commotion. Kewat was engaged in a heated altercation with a fellow passenger.
“The altercation escalated into violence as Kewat subjected him to a barrage of punches and kicks. Dinesh tried to intervene but Kewat turned his wrath upon him,” said police officials.
In a fit of rage, Kewat went to the railway track and picked up a wooden plank. He approached Ganesh, who was lying on the bench, and hit him with the plank with force on his head. The air was filled with the screams of Ganesh due to relentless attacks by Kewat.
The official further said, “A beggar, who was sleeping near the bench, woke up after hearing the screams. Within a few seconds, Kewat subjected the beggar to his brutal attack. He smashed his head with the same plank.” Ganesh and the beggar laid motionless on the platform and Kewat vanished into the night leaving behind the bloodstained plank, with the blood of the victims. Staff of Government Railway Police (GRP) and RPF rushed to the spot after receiving the information and found four critically injured persons lying on the platform in a pool of blood, with two of them lying motionless.
The police called an ambulance and rushed the injured persons to Mayo Hospital where Ganesh and the beggar were declared brought dead. The police intensified searches on the basis of CCTV footage and tracked Kewat at Itarsi end of the railway station. He was brought to the GRP station in the morning hours. A case under Sections 103 (a), 109 (1) of BNS was registered by GRP against Kewat. SP Dr Akshay Shinde said that Kewat was mentally unstable and did not reveal anything during interrogation.

After being arrested, Kewat was taken to the police station where he faced intense questioning from the GRP officials. However, the mentally unstable Kewat assaulted the police during the questioning. He was then handcuffed by the police and kept in lock-up.
