THE yellow-coloured light emanating from LED bulb can be effective in controlling the menace of mosquitoes. Sounds intriguing, but research by group of students of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), claims to have found that yellow-coloured LED bulb has been able to deter the mosquitoes. The students of MSc Physics undertook research on Nano Science and Nano Technology and since mosquito related diseases like chikungunya and Dengue that had troubled the citizens was fresh in their mind and hence they decided to work on the same. They were guided by Dr Sanjay Dhoble, Professor, Department of Physics. During the research the students experiments with various colours bulbs, like red, blue and yellow. And the exposure to yellow LED bulb showed that mosquitoes were keeping away from the room when it was on.

After extensive results the students and their guide detailed it and submitted same for patent. The markets has en number of anti dote to counter the mosquitoes but most effective proved to be yellow coloured LED bulb. People spend huge money on buying protection from mosquitoes, and some of them are harmful in long run. But the yellow coloured LED bulb is most useful and also less expensive. Rising mosquito menace is troubling citizens like never before. Spike in cases of chikungunya, especially this year, has been quite significant. Those infected are still not fully recovered from the effects of chikungunya.

Hence Dr Dhoble said the usage of yellow coloured LED bulb is very effective in keeping mosquitoes at bay. Some of the leading electrical appliances companies have introduced the yellow-coloured LED bulb, but these days citizens are preferring cool day light, which emanates white-coloured, in their households. Citizens can put up yellow-coloured bulbs at verandah, in garden, and at entry so as to curb mosquito menace. The students who formed the research team included Mukesh Turkane, Siddheshwar Nagpure and Pranali Zade, all students of Nano Science andTechnology course, and Dr Abhijit Kadam, Research student.
