A police team detained a moped-borne man carrying Rs 1.50 crore cash after stopping him on Central Avenue on late Wednesday night. The rider, identified as Shakir Khan Haji Nasir Khan (42) from Yashodhara Nagar, was detained after officers found the large sum of money stashed in his moped and a bag he was carrying. Police found the Rs 1.35 crore cash hidden in the vehicle’s utility box and additional Rs 15 lakh in a bag. The incident occurred around 9 pm when police, conducting routine checks of vehicles, grew suspicious of Khan’s behaviour and decided to stop him. Upon searching Khan’s moped, the cops found the cash haul. The discovery has raised concerns within the Election Commission about potential electoral malpractice, including the illegal movement of money.

The Election Commission of India has been informed about the seizure by the police who are now investigating whether the cash has been linked to any illegal activities during the polls. Khan was questioned at the scene but reportedly gave vague responses regarding the source and purpose of the money. According to police sources, Khan’s statements did not clarify whether the cash was related to personal finances, election, or illicit activities such as money laundering. Given the scale of the amount and the timing — during a high-stakes Assembly election period — the police are treating this matter seriously.

The police have launched a thorough investigation to trace the origins of the money. Investigators are particularly focused on whether it is linked to electoral bribery or any unaccounted financial flow associated with the ongoing elections. A senior police official stated that they are investigating the case and also checking the CCTV footage to ascertain the source of the cash. Senior police officials reached Tehsil Police Station to supervise the investigation late in the night.
