The investigation into the stone-pelting attack on former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has raised several unanswered questions, as the police uncover discrepancies in the details surrounding the incident. While the Nagpur Rural Police have initiated a thorough probe, technical methods, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and DUM (Data Utilisation Management) data, have revealed some gaps in the story of the attack.
On Monday night, Deshmukh’s car was reportedly attacked near Belgaon turning, on Jalalkheda Road near Katol, when four assailants on two motorcycles threw stones at the vehicle. Deshmukh suffered an injury on his forehead and was later admitted to a private hospital in Nagpur, where he was discharged on Tuesday evening following treatment.
While the police have reconstructed the sequence of events using AI technology, the findings have raised several questions. The attackers threw three stones: one from the front, one from the window near the rear passenger seat, and one from behind the car. Interestingly, the stone thrown from the back appeared to have the potential to strike Deshmukh in the head, but it did not make contact. Also, there was no blood found inside the car, which contradicts initial claims of the former Minister being injured by the stone from behind. Although Deshmukh has injury on his forehead, there is a strong possibility that the stone from the rear did not actually hit him.
IGP (Nagpur Range) Dr Dilip Bhujbal, to a question asked in press conference, answered, “We have also found that no blood was present inside the car.”
Further discrepancies were uncovered when investigators examined the scene of the attack. Forensic teams seized stones and other relevant items from the location, and footage from CCTV cameras was reviewed. However, a key piece of evidence remains elusive: a CCTV camera located six kilometers from the scene showed no sign of the motorcycles between 8 and 9 pm, the time the attack was believed to have occurred. This absence of footage from the nearby surveillance camera has added to the mystery surrounding the attackers’ movements.
The attackers reportedly fled towards Bharashingi on two motorcycles after the incident. But the lack of footage from the CCTV camera raises further questions about their route and timing. More clarity may emerge once expert reports come in.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr Harssh Poddar said that the case is being investigated from all possible angles with the help of Forensic teams. He also said that Deshmukh, his PA and complainant in the case Ujjwal
Bhoyar, driver and one other person, have been issued notices for recording their statement. However, they were not willing to immediately register their statement.
IGP Bhujbal said that the police are actively pursuing leads and the case remains under close scrutiny as forensic and technical teams continue their analysis.
