Saanand Verma Expresses His Deep Affection for Chhath Puja
Saanand Verma, renowned for his versatile and humorous portrayal of Anokhelal Saxena in &TV’s Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai, holds a profound reverence for Chhath Puja, a festival that resonates deeply with him. Originating from Bihar, Saanand views Chhath Puja not merely as a religious observance, but as a celebration of devotion, purity, and cultural heritage. Growing up within a strong family tradition, he believes the festival fortifies connections with both individuals and the community. In a recent conversation, the actor shared his heartfelt emotions and how he observes Chhath Puja.
What emotions do you associate with Chhath Puja?
During Chhath Puja, everything transforms—cities and towns take on a fresh, clean appearance. The entire community unites, contributing in various ways to enhance the festival's significance. People feed the less fortunate, help clean the streets, and even participate in cleaning the Ganga River. The atmosphere becomes overwhelmingly positive, dispelling all negativity. Whenever I hear Chhathi Maiya’s songs, tears flow down my eyes. Eating the prasad of Chhathi Maiya feels like savoring nectar. I truly experience purity during Chhath Puja.
Does anyone in your family celebrate Chhath Puja?
Yes, my relatives observe Chhath Puja. My mother wished to perform it, but it’s a demanding festival that requires immense effort and devotion. As she has aged and given our home circumstances, I haven’t taken on that responsibility. Therefore, I have always celebrated it with my relatives.
How different is Chhath Puja celebrations in Mumbai compared to UP and Bihar?
While the celebrations in Mumbai differ from those in Bihar or Uttar Pradesh, the devotion and sincerity here are palpable. There’s significant awareness of Chhath Puja among Mumbai residents, with celebrations organized at places like Juhu Beach. I’ve received numerous invitations to partake in Chhath Puja at Juhu.
Chhath Puja prasad is unique. What is your favorite?
My favorite prasad from Chhath Puja is definitely Thekua. This delightful traditional offering, made from wheat flour, jaggery, and ghee, is deep-fried to a perfect golden hue. Thekua holds a special significance in the festival and boasts a rich, sweet flavor that’s irresistible. Not only is it delicious, but it also embodies the devotion and love that goes into its preparation. For me, Chhath Puja would feel incomplete without enjoying this special prasad.
