WORLD’S wait came to an end on Wednesday as the election results from the United States of America (USA) showed Mr. Donald Trump winning the race for the Oval Office. More than only political aspect of Mr. Trump defeating his rival Ms. Kamala Harris, his victory has triggered a discussion about implications of his comeback vis-a-vis the USA’s relations with the world. Mr. Trump’s victory has proved many of the media projections wrong. Most of the mainstream media outlets have been proved wrong, indicating that they have lost touch with the pulse of the people. This has left many wondering if the mainstream media projections revolve around considerations to business interests and friendliness to influential entities with media access.

The powerful media in the USA castigated him consistently. Probably, this proved counter-productive and earned Mr. Trump public sympathy. Also, the way he negotiated the troubled waters of impeachment proceedings, raids on his properties, insurrection charges, makes his comeback significant. Addressing the gathering of supporters at the Palm Beach County Convention Centre in Florida after winning the important swing state of Pennsylvania, Mr. Trump spoke about fixing ‘everything’ and also assured to usher in ‘golden age of America’. Soon, the heads of various countries congratulated Mr. Trump on his victory. Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi also congratulated Mr. Trump and referred to ‘renewing collaboration’ in the context of global peace, stability, and prosperity. Obviously, Mr. Trump’s comeback as the President of the USA has global significance. For, his return may elate some and upset some. This is mainly because of his stand regarding trade with China, tough talk on America’s border security, moving the USA embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem etc. This importance was visible in the markets too. Especially in the Asian markets, barring China and Hong Kong indices, all others registered uptick on Wednesday.

This must be on account of happy feeling about the USA pension funds finding their way into the non-China countries in Asia. Of course, China may have apprehensions about another round of trade war with the USA with return of Mr. Trump. India has a reason to smile. For, she can expect better strategic as well as trade ties with the USA with the return of Mr. Trump to the White House. Similarly, there may be an impact on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Mr. Trump had shown previously that he had no reservations about talking to Russia. Hence, with him being the President of the USA, the world will be watching closely how he responds to global need for resolution of Russia-Ukraine conflict. In case of Israel-Hamas conflict, he has already spoken favourably about Israel’s stand. Whether he continues with that or speaks the language of resolution, also will be watched closely. On domestic front, though he has earned victory, he may face a strong opposition on a variety of issues.

He may face difficulties in realising his vision of ‘golden age of America’. One of the major components of his vision is ‘efficiency’ in the USA administration. That the idea is backed by his supporter and business tycoon Mr. Elon Musk, hints at introduction of Silicon Valley type governance. The response of the bureaucracy there to this, will be interesting to watch. There may be many sub-texts to Mr. Trump’s victory. Those may be discussed the world over in due course of time as the picture unfolds. For the time being, Mr. Trump is rightly basking in the glory of his historic comeback.
