The Traffic Police have identified 23 traffic accident ‘black spots’ across Nagpur where
43 serious accidents have occurred over past three years. Of these, two ‘black spots’ — Prakash High School-Kapsi Bridge and Maruti Showroom Square — have been particularly dangerous as 27 serious accidents have occurred there.
As per the report of the Traffic Police, several locations in the city have been underlined with a high number of accidents.
The ‘black spots’ identified in the report are -- Old Pardi Naka Square (Pardi): 8 serious accidents; Hanuman Mandir Square (Pardi): 5 serious accidents; Prakash High School to Kapsi Bridge (Pardi): 15 serious accidents; Maruti Showroom Square (Indora): 12 serious accidents; 8th Mile Square, Amravati Road (Wadi): 5 serious accidents; Uppalwadi Bridge (Indora): 2 serious accidents; Jaripatka Square (Indora): 4 serious accidents; Vita Bhatti Square (Indora): 3 serious accidents; Mahesh Dhaba (Belatarodi): 3 serious accidents; Chinchbhuvan Square (Beltarodi): 4 serious accidents; Manewada Square (Ajni): 2 serious accidents; Mhalgi Nagar Square (Sakkardara): 2 serious
accidents; Wadadhamna (Wadi): 2 serious accidents; Dongargaon (Hingna): 1 serious accident; Rajiv Nagar (MIDC): 2 serious accidents; IC Square (MIDC): 2 serious accidents; Maharajbagh Square (Sitabuldi): 1 serious accident; Chhatrapati Square (Dhantoli): 3 serious accidents; Chamat Chakki Square (Hudkeshwar): 1 serious accident. No accidents have been reported at Dighori Bridge (Sakkardara) and Telephone Exchange Square (Hudkeshwar) in the past three years.
A senior police official mentioned that of these 23 ‘black spots’, the number of accidents has decreased at 17 locations due to various precautionary measures taken including construction of road divider, filling of rumbler strips, proper illumination and road dividers. These spots could be removed from the list after further observation, he stated.
However, two spots — Prakash High School to Kapsi Bridge and Maruti Showroom Square — continue to be major concerns for the department due to high number of fatalities.
15 accidents reported
between Prakash HS and Kapsi Bridge
Police Inspector Nitin Patange of the Kamptee Traffic Division informed ‘The Hitavada’, about the situation at the spot, Prakash High School to Kapsi Bridge, and stated that the number of accidents has drastically reduced since May 28 after precautionary measures, including the extension of road dividers. However, a stretch between the spices factory and Kapsi Bridge has emerged as another accident hotspot. “I have written to NHAI requesting installation of high-mast lights and speed-breaker to restrict speed of vehicles and improve visibility,” he added.
12 serious mishaps
took place at Maruti Showroom square
On the issue of accidents at Maruti Showroom square on Kamptee Road, Police Inspector Chittaranjan Chandure of the Indora Traffic Division explained that the square witnesses heavy traffic movement as five roads meet at the spot. The delayed operation of the new Ring Road makes the situation more serious for commuters.
“The road has numerous potholes and we have requested the Public
Works Department for immediate repair. Many local residents commute on two-wheelers recklessly, as if they are just around their house and forget
that they are on a busy
highway. This careless
driving also contributes to the accidents,” PI Nitin Patange pointed out.
