City’s Grandmaster Sankalp Gupta was elated after D Gukesh was crowned as the new world champion in Singapore on Thursday. Gukesh dethroned China’s Ding Liren on his way to the historic triumph, sealing it in the 14th and last game of a see-saw battle. “Very happy for him (Gukesh). It’s simply sensational what he has achieved, youngest World Champion ever,” Gupta told ‘The Hitavada’ on Thursday night. Gupta, who was with the Indian team during the Chess Olympiad earlier this year, said Gukesh is a very calm person.

 

“He’s a very calm, mature person, really happy for him,” added Gupta. Gupta served as an assistant coach for the gold medal winning Indian men’s team at the 45th Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, Hungary in September.
