AIIMS Bhopal has once again showcased its medical excellence with the successful treatment of a 20-year-old patient suffering from a critical heart condition. The patient, who was experiencing severe shortness of breath and palpitations, was admitted to the hospital, where a thorough examination revealed a mass in the right atrium and weakness in the right ventricle of his heart. The heart team, led by specialists from the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department, determined that traditional open-heart surgery, which requires stopping the heart and using a heart-lung machine, would increase the risks in this case due to the patient’s fragile heart condition. Instead, a complex surgery using a pump-assisted beating heart technique was chosen to stabilize the patient’s heart function during the procedure.

Professor (Dr) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “This case exemplifies the importance of early intervention and the advanced capabilities of our multidisciplinary teams. Our Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery department’s expertise enabled us to provide this patient with the critical care he required.” The surgery, which was successfully conducted using the innovative pump-assisted beating heart technique, allowed the heart to continue functioning during the operation, leading to better outcomes and a faster recovery for the patient. The procedure was performed under the guidance of Dr Yogesh Niwariya, Head of the Cardiothoracic Department, and the surgical team included Dr M Kishan, Dr Surendra Yadav, Dr Rahul Sharma, Dr Vikram Watti, and Dr Aditya Sirohi. The anesthesia team, led by Dr Nagabhushanam, along with perfusionists Sushma and Vedant, and nursing staff Poonam and Hansa, also played a crucial role in the successful outcome of the surgery.
