The Chhattisgarh Government has enforced comprehensive rules and regulations governing the disposal of fly ash generated by industries. Fly ash, a byproduct of industrial processes finds application in cement plants, brick manufacturing, road construction, mines, and landfilling, stated Public Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal. During a debate in the Budget session on Monday, Dr Mahant raised concerns about irregularities in the dumping of fly ash by industries in Korba and Rajgarh. He highlighted the adverse health effects caused by the reckless dumping of fly ash, which becomes airborne and poses risks to humans, animals, and trees. Industries were accused of failing to properly cover the dumped fly ash, leading to its dispersion by wind. Industries in Raipur use fly ash in cement plants and brick kilns.

Responding to these concerns, Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal stated that the government conducts regular inspections to ensure compliance with fly ash disposal regulations. He reported that fines totalling Rs 2.74 crore have been imposed on industries found violating the rules. Additionally, measures have been taken to curb improper disposal practices, particularly in mines in Raipur, Raigarh and Korba.

Dr Mahant emphasised the need for stronger enforcement of regulations, particularly in Korba and Raigarh, where reckless dumping not only persists but has increased despite government interventions. Minister Jaiswal assured that stringent action would be taken against any violations reported by the Leader of the Opposition. Minister Jaiswal reiterated that fly ash cannot be disposed of on roadsides and emphasised the government’s commitment to enforcing regulations. He reassured that any complaints brought to the government’s attention would be promptly addressed and appropriate action taken.
