Nagpur and Ramtek will go to polls on Friday. The district administration is all geared up for the vital event. District Collector and Returning officer Dr Vipin Itankar, and Additional Collector Tushar Thombare, had been taking frequent reviews of preparations for the election work. “The next few hours are pivotal for realising the outcomes of the extensive preparations undertaken over months for the polling day in Nagpur and Ramtek,” said Dr Vipin Itankar. There are total 4,510 polling stations in the district, of which 2,405 are in Ramtek and 2,105 are in Nagpur. There will be 12 booths in total for both districts, handled entirely by women Presiding Officers (PO), as well as polling stations tailored for persons with disabilities (PwD), also staffed with PwD polling officers. Police will also be deploying women police personnels at those booths. Apart from this, some booths will be handled by youngsters.
There are no vulnerable polling stations in the district. However, to enhance security measures, certain polling stations have been identified critical, where Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will be implemented. There are a total of 124 critical polling stations, 61 in Nagpur, and 63 in Ramtek. The non-CAPF measures will include the presence of micro observers and compulsory webcasting. Each polling booth will be staffed with a constable. “There are no sensitive polling stations in the district. We called it critical, because we noted in the past that some incidents took place at those centres,” Dr Itankar made it clear.
Dr Itankar also highlighted that in an effort to engage voters and enhance their voting experience, several polling centres across the district have been transformed into theme-based settings such as tribal, textile, sports, metro, and more. During the last election, the voting percentage was 54 per cent and the administration is targeting 75 per cent polling for which, various measures to encourage voters to exercise their franchise were undertaken during the last fortnight. Polling parties have already left to man the polling stations. The District Collector asserted that all offices and workplaces must take note of issuing a public holiday for their employees. Individuals are encouraged to lodge complaints if their workplace fails to adhere to this, with the Labour Commission designated to address such matters.
