Following the recent power explosion at a scrap workshop in the city, which claimed two lives, Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has sprung into action. Launching a thorough inspection campaign, the JMC is targeting establishments dealing with explosives and highly flammable materials. Senior officials of Fire Department of JMC are conducting inspections at petrol pumps, LPG cylinder godowns, hostels, restaurants, marriage halls, high-rise buildings and similar structures. The primary focus is on ensuring the availability of adequate firefighting equipment. Likewise, senior officials are scrutinizing fire safety certificates, a mandatory requirement for such establishments.
Kushagra Thakur, Superintendent of Fire Department, said the drive has been ongoing for several days. Surprise inspections have been conducted at 69 establishments, including 51 petrol pumps and gas godowns. Significant irregularities were found, particularly at fuel filling stations and gas godowns, with most lacking the required number of fire extinguishers and other essential equipment. He said notices have been issued to owner of concerned establishments and they were asked to rectification needed things within a week. Thakur said on Saturday, they conducted inspection at hospitals and hotels including Ayushman Children Hospital, Mahakoshal Heart Hospital, Johri Hospital, Golden Heart Hospital, Triveni Health care, Shikhar Palace Hotel, Arihant Hotel etc.
Irregularities were found at the establishments, leading to issuance of notices to the respective owners, demanding prompt compliance with safety measures and certification requirements within a week. Thakur said senior fire department officials will revisit these establishments to ensure compliance. Furthermore, inspections are broadening to include banks, large showrooms and other similar establishments to ensure presence of adequate measures to address emergency situations like fires. Meanwhile, Municipal Commissioner, Preeti Yadav has asked fire department to expedite the drive and take stern action against violators of safety regulations.
