Spontaneous response of college students to voter awareness drive
Various activities are being organised all over India for voters’ awareness under Systematic Education of Voters and Electoral Participation (SVEEP). Nagpur has made its mark in this activity and efforts are being continued to increase voter turnout through various activities. A grand event, which is a part of the same, is being conducted on Saturday at Kasturchand Park from 6 am onwards.
Thousands of voters in Nagpur will collectively take up the rights and duties conferred by the Constitution of conscious citizenship. Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari, Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Singal, Municipal Commissioner Dr Abhijeet Chaudhari, Collector and District Election Officer Dr Vipin Itankar, Additional Collector and Returning Officer for Ramtek Lok Sabha Constituency Tushar Thombare, Special Inspector General of Police Chhering Dorje, Joint Commissioner of Police Aswati Dorje, Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Parishad Saumya Sharma, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Harssh Poddar will be present on this occasion.
Collector Dr Vipin Itankar held a review meeting and instructed the senior officers to make the programme a success by maintaining proper coordination.

Collector and District Election Officer Dr Vipin Itankar stepped up for duty to vote. In response to his appeal, the new voters promised to vote with a mobile torch in one hand and the finger of their left hand raised. Suresh Bhat Auditorium, where the district administration had organised an activity of voting awareness, witnessed enthusiasm and positive participation of the youth.
District Election Office, Municipal Corporation and Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University had organised the programme jointly.
Dr Vipin Itankar, Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Saumya Sharma, Dr Prashant Bokare, Vice-Chancellor of RTMNU, Municipal Assistant Commissioner Mahesh Dhamecha, Deputy Commissioner Milind Meshram along with university senate members, management members were present.
Dr Itankar said that the new voters of Nagpur district, who are ready to exercise their right to vote for the first time in the Lok Sabha general elections, are the true ambassadors of the voter awareness programme.
Dr Itankar stated that through one’s active participation, one would create voter awareness in one’s family, colony, area. The district administration has successfully implemented ‘Mission Yuva’ and has registered one-and-a-half lakh voters in the age group of 17 to 19 years and expressed the belief that the ‘Mission Distinction’ planned with the aim of 75 per cent voting in the district would be successful.
Dr Itankar also highlighted the important role of youth voters. On this occasion, he also gave information about the various facilities that are being made available for the Nagpur Lok Sabha general election, scheduled to be held on April 19.
Saumya Sharma said that by participating in the voting process in the Lok Sabha elections, new voters get an opportunity to participate in the era of democracy. While giving information about the Lok Sabha election process, she appealed to the students to create public awareness in their locality to increase the participation of women in voting along with men. She appealed to new voters to participate through reel making competition on various social media using the hashtag ‘I am proud voter’.
She informed that the colleges in which the students would vote in large numbers will be honoured. Sharma also guided about ‘Voter Helpline App’ along with the website ‘https://votesr.eci.gov.in’ for voter registration and getting information about polling station.
Mahesh Dhamecha, on behalf of the municipal council, gave information about wheelchairs, vehicle arrangements for senior voters, etc. to be made available to disabled voters to exercise their right to vote. Dr Prashant Bokare appealed to the present students not to miss the opportunity to vote in the Lok Sabha elections.
Athlete Neha Dhabale, who won the silver medal in the ‘Khelo India University Games’, promised the audience to participate in voting. A street play ‘Ek Votse Kya Farak Padta Hai’ was performed.
A teaser of the audio tape ‘Adhikar Hai’ prepared by the Collector's Office and a special song ‘Mai Bharat Hoo, Bharat Hai Mazme...’ prepared by the Election Commission of India for voter awareness were screened on this occasion. A large number of students from colleges affiliated to RTMNU, NSS, NCC, University Sports Authority, Student Development Welfare Committee participated in this programme.
