On Tuesday morning around 6 am, residents of Mother Teresa Nagar Colony experienced scenes reminiscent of heavy rainfall as several houses were flooded. The situation was so dire that on waking, residents had to first evacuate their young children because water had risen to knee level inside their homes. It took hours of effort for the residents to manually remove the water from their houses. The incident occurred in Mother Teresa Nagar Colony due to a burst pipeline during sewer line work. Within a short period, sewer water inundated several homes in the colony. Local residents reported the flooding by calling the emergency number 181 and demanded immediate repair work.

To address the situation the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation shut off the water supply, which finally stopped the flow of water. Residents informed that the sewer line installation was going on in Mother Teresa Nagar when the pipeline burst on Tuesday morning, causing sewer water to flood their homes. They said that water drained out of houses located on higher ground within two to three hours, but homes on lower ground remained flooded and required hours of effort from the residents to clear the water.

Local residents said since January, multiple pits have been dug and then filled in throughout their colony for sewer line work. The ongoing process over the past four to five months has significantly disrupted the daily life of the residents.
Surprisingly, even hours after the incident, JMC officials were unaware of the flooding in Mother Teresa Nagar Colony. The indifferent attitude of the municipal authorities raises questions about their efficiency and responsiveness to the public’s needs. Executive Engineer, Kamlesh Shrivastava when contacted informed that the repairing work is on and the normal water supply will be restored on Wednesday.
