While many students stuck in Kyrgyzstan and their parents insisted on evacuation, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav conveyed to them the Centre’s assurance on safety. He confirmed that the Union Government had conveyed to him that Indian students in Kyrgyzstan were safe for now. He also did a video call to students studying in Kyrgyzstan and advised them that “coming back home without appearing for their scheduled examinations could mean the loss of an academic year. He also said he would ensure their safe return to their respective hometowns during the 2.5-month-long break after the exams.” Following clashes in the central Asian nation’s capital Bishkek, the students and their parents had been apprehensive since clashes broke out between local and foreign students in Bishkek around 10 days ago.

The clashes, as per some students’ accounts, were between local and Pakistani students. However, Indian students felt threatened over reports that locals were not distinguishing between them and Pakistani students. Of the estimated 15,000 Indians studying in Kyrgyzstan, some 1,200 are from Madhya Pradesh, the majority from Ujjain, Indore and smaller towns in Malwa. Most of the students are pursuing medicine. Sources said that some of the students, during the interaction, demanded that to be evacuated. Chief Minister said, “It was brought to my attention that some students from our State went for medical study in Kyrgyzstan and there was some dispute between local students and foreign students in which some students were also injured. After which, we are worried about the Indian students studying there.

I have just talked to the students of our state who are stuck there. They are safe. We are also in constant touch with the Indian government and the Kyrgyzstan government. Students have been given proper security there.” He further added, “We have decided that the students should be brought back from there after their exams get over, otherwise, they will face a year loss. We have told the administration there that in any case, the examinations should be conducted on time and proper security measures should also be ensured. The Government is in contact 24 hours, no one is hurt. We hope that the situation will become normal soon.”
