Construction of State’s first double decker elevated flyover bridge in Sant Hirdaram Nagar of Bhopal to tackle the ever-increasing vehicular traffic is likely to catch the pace after the counting for Lok Sabha polls is over. The flyover is being constructed at a cost of Rs 306.40 crores is going through soil testing process. Sources said that after Model Code of Conduct is lifted, official bhoomipujan will be performed. The bridge is planned at Bhopal-Indore Highway from Sewage Pump House Laukhedi to Municipal Visarjan Ghat. The 2,900 meter long and 26 meter broad bridge will be constructed to cover the space vacant after the BRTS demolition. In the first phase, Public Works Department (PWD) conducted soil testing on the spot.

Officials of PWD said that testing of soil consistency has been concluded as per the design and second phase of testing is being held. Earlier, it was planned to start the bridge from Halalpura but later officials suggested to start it from Sewage Pump House. In future, Metro line is expected to pass through the bridge. There will be single pillar system in this bridge. Additional pillars will be provided on upper side of bridge so that in future, Metro route can be prepared by extending the pillars’ height. There will be 3.20 meter broad central verge for the Metro train. Talking about the bridge construction, Jawed Shakeel, Superintendent Engineer, PWD Bhopal, said, “design of double decker is approved and first phase of soil testing has been done. In the second phase, re-check is being done for the soil.”

He further informed that the elevated bridge is proposed to deal with the traffic issue. He said that this would ease the traffic flow from Bhopal-Indore-Bhopal route. Traffic chaos will be dealt at the main road and there will be service road and parking lot under the bridge. Officials said, Sant Hirdaram Nagar is a trader hub and the area face traffic chaos on regular basis. The flyover will be 2,600 meter long, approach road 300 meter and RRC drain 2 kilometres. Buses will run below the flyover and Metro train will pass above the bridge.
