The State is witnessing blistering heat as the mercury soared to the 48 degrees Celsius mark. The climbing temperature has not only increased health complications but has also contributed to a surge in power consumption demand. On Monday, the peak power consumption in Bhopal city broke a nearly three-year record as it reached 560 MW (megawatts), according to data from the Madhya Pradesh Vidyut Vitran Company Ltd. (MPVVCL). As per the data, this is a whopping increase of 45 MW in just six days compared to the data on May 21. The past three years show a marked increase in power consumption. In 2021, the peak power consumption was recorded at 369 MW. This figure rose to 500 MW in 2022 and slightly decreased to 474 MW in 2023. However, on May 21, 2024, there was a substantial jump to 515 MW, indicating a 41 MW increase from the previous year. Now, on May 27, the power consumption increased to an all-time high of 560 MW.

This sharp rise is a testament to the growing demand for electricity as residents cope with the intense heat by increasing their use of air conditioners, coolers, and other cooling appliances. Zahid Khan, the General Manager of the City Circle at MPVVCL, elaborated on the reasons behind the spike in power demand in a conversation with “The Hitavada.” He noted, “This year, the demand for power consumption reached its peak earlier than in previous years. The primary reason is the rising temperatures, which have led to increased usage of electronic appliances such as air conditioners and coolers. These appliances are essential for comfort during the heat wave but contribute significantly to the overall power demand.”“As the temperature started increasing with the start of Nautapa on Saturday, MPVVCL announced that there will be no planned shutdowns until Tuesday (May 28) to provide relief to the people.

However, for today (May 29), we will observe the situation and will start the process of shutdowns for maintenance purposes from May 30,” highlighted the MPVVCL official when asked about a possible extension of the no shutdown decision in the city amid rising temperature. Notably, this year the peak power consumption reached twice, one on May 21 with 515 MW and another on May 27 with 560 MW, this was recorded much earlier than the previous years. In 2021, 2022, and 2023, the peak power consumption was recorded in July and June. This shift underscores the impact of the current heat wave-like conditions and suggests that the power grid is being pushed to its limits earlier in the summer season.
