With temperature hitting record high in Bhopal, doctors say that there is an increase in number of patients coming with complications caused due to heat exhaustion. Many patients are visiting the OPD with complaints like indigestion, loose motion, vomiting, etc. Especially in Government hospitals, 70 per cent patients are visiting from the slum areas. According to civil surgeon Dr Rakesh Srivastav, 962 patients contacted with the doctors in JP Hospital on Wednesday. Most of them were suffering from cold, cough, fever, stomach ache, indigestion, etc. If we talk about general days, around 700 to 800 patients visit the OPD every day. For past four days, day temperature in Bhopal is hovering around 42 degrees Celsius and humidity is rising due to cloud cover in sky. The combination of heat and humidity is making the people ill.

Gandhi Medical College (GMC) saw recorded break number of patients since morning hours. On Wednesday, around 1,900 patients visited the OPD and 130 patients visited the doctor with Abha Id registration. The hospital administration said that for past one week around 1,800 to 2000 patients are visiting every day and out of this 70 percent patients are coming from the slum areas. Dr Rakesh said, “our body fights extreme heat by sweating. In extreme conditions, the body cannot dissipate enough heat leading to quickened metabolic activity. Diabetics, the elderly and children are most vulnerable to get heatstroke.” He further said, diarrhoea and vomiting is very common in this season. Dr Sumit Bansal from a private clinic in New Market said, “wearing excess clothing or cloth that fits tightly wont’ allow your body to cool properly. The heat cramps and heat exhaustion are the mildest forms of the effects of heat where the person develops body aches.”
