Finally, hope of justice for NEET aspirants as the Supreme Court of India has addressed allegations of a paper leak in the NEET UG 2024 exam on Tuesday. Candidates have filed petitions requesting a re-examination and a thorough investigation into the claims of malpractices. They argue that the integrity of the exam has been compromised, particularly highlighting incidents in Rajasthan and Bihar where the exam papers were reportedly leaked in advance. However, the court declined to halt the counselling process for admissions, allowing those who passed the exam to proceed with the next steps. Apart from this, retired Madras High Court Judge A K Rajan has recommended that the Tamil Nadu government scrap the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions and instead use Class 12 marks as the sole criterion.

“I don’t think medical college admission should be based solely on the 12th board exam results. I’m not sure about Tamil Nadu but this rule would not be fair to apply across the country. The reason is that students don’t have enough practical knowledge in 12th standard. Also, different state boards have varying paper designs and evaluation parameters, making some exams tougher than others. Apart from this, regarding the NEET scam, I believe that re-checking is more important than re-examination. Re-exams may take time and money, causing stress for students. However, NTA should set papers based on NCERT and other sources to make them more challenging. Include diverse question types, such as assertion-reason and multiple-choice questions, to better assess students’ knowledge”. Earlier, students could get into AIIMS with a certain score, but now, even with a good score, AIIMS is out of reach. This shows that the competition is intensifying, and the paper level needs to be upgraded. It’s better to upgrade the paper level to make it more challenging and fair. Said, Dr. Amit Gupta, teacher at NEET mentor institute.

I don’t think that class 12 marks should be the criteria for medical college admission because it’s not necessary that every child gets a quality education. India’s education system is not that good yet, and the level of education and exposure that an urban child gets is not the same as what a rural child gets. Maybe, it would be possible in Tamil Nadu but not across the nation. Also, what about the students who have been preparing for NEET for years? What about their hard work? This will raise a question. And during the NEET preparation period, we become academically mature enough, which may not be the case for every child at the school level. So, the NEET exam is necessary, and if scams are happening under NTA’s watch, imagine how easy it will be for states to give marks to children, which can lower the competition level and medical standards, said, Shreya Yadav, a medical aspirant. After DMK won the election in 2021, they formed a panel to study how NEET affects students. The panel collected a lot of data and heard from students, parents, and the public. They wrote a report that shows NEET is unfair to poor students and those from lower social classes. Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, M K Stalin, shared the report on social media (X), saying that DMK was the first to recognise the problems with NEET and fought against it.
