Who could have imagined a garden with colorful flowers and hundreds of butterflies fluttering over what was once a bauxite mine? Hindalco has demonstrated its commitment to responsible land management in the Samri Mines lease area under Kusmi block of Balrampur district. Once mining activities in the 15-acre Amtahi Bauxite Mines concluded, Hindalco embarked on transforming the land into a lush green bio park. This initiative aligns with Hindalco’s Sustainable Mining Framework, which emphasizes environmental stewardship and social performance leadership. The framework, a part of Hindalco’s Sustainable Mining Charter, provides a blueprint for the mining industry, focusing on minimizing environmental impact and enhancing community resilience. The transformation of the barren landscape into the vibrant Samri bio park began in March 2022 and was completed in June 2023. After 15 months of dedicated effort and a total investment of Rs 1.3 crore, the park now represents a blend of ecological restoration and community enrichment. At the heart of the bio park lies a 5-acre expanse, offering numerous amenities including a conference hall, solar-powered illumination, a beautiful fountain, and modern washroom facilities.

The verdant landscape also features a tranquil lawn area, an open-air gym, and boating excursions. A picturesque rest shelter provides a place for relaxation and contemplation amidst nature’s beauty. Sustainable irrigation for the park is achieved through a nearby 5-acre rainwater harvesting pond. This reservoir supports lush landscaping and fosters integrated fish and duck farming, enriching the local community while conserving water resources. Additionally, the Samri Bio-park provides year-round employment for 12 individuals who maintain its upkeep and security. Beyond the main park, a 0.9-acre herb garden boasts 35 varieties of medicinal and aromatic plants. The successful cultivation of these herbs on previously minedout land highlights Hindalco’s commitment to experimentation and innovation. The Samri bio park stands as a symbol of biodiversity, hope, and inspiration for future ecological restoration and community development endeavors. Kailash Pandey, Business Head of Mining and Mineral Business at Hindalco, stated, “Hindalco is committed to protecting the environment.

We are continuously striving towards quality mining and giving back to nature. Our goal is to rehabilitate the land so that it can be used again by the community.” A shimmering rainwater harvesting pond, surrounded by lush greenery, provides sanctuary for countless species of birds and insects. Visitors are greeted by the gentle murmur of a sequential fountain, creating a soothing melody that echoes nature’s enduring grace. The park caters to all, from avid nature enthusiasts to casual visitors seeking solace from modern life’s chaos. Today, the Samri Bio-park stands as a testament to the possibility of transforming desolate landscapes into oases of life and beauty. It serves as a living, breathing reminder of the potential for a better future when we dare to dream.
