The Red terrorists of CPI (Maoist) are rattled by the surrender of Nangsu Tumretti alias Giridhar and his wife Sangeeta Usendi before Gadchiroli Police recently. Shaken to the core by the surrender of Giridhar, who was a Member of Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) of CPI (Maoist), the ultras have now asked its cadres and supporters to ‘stay alert’. Giridhar, who was carrying a reward of Rs 25 lakh, was not only DKSZC Member but also a Member of Maoists’ Sub-Military Commission and Western Sub-Zonal Commander-in-Chief. More recently, he was looking after the merged North and South Gadchiroli Divisions of the proscribed Maoist organisation. Since joining the Naxalites/Maoists in 1996-97, he rose through the ranks. During these years, he came in contact with several Maoist sympathisers and those providing funds and other support. Also, he had seen transition of the erstwhile Naxalite organisation into CPI (Maoist).

Shriniwas, purportedly the Spokesperson of Western Sub-Zonal Bureau of CPI (Maoist), has asked the Maoist cadres and those who had come in contact with Giridhar to ‘stay alert’ fearing that their identity might be exposed by the surrendered Maoist leader. Neelotpal, Superintendent of Police, Gadchiroli, told ‘The Hitavada’ that the CPI (Maoist) had issued a ‘panic press note’ also within 24 hours of Giridhar and Sangeeta’s surrender. “They are fearing that surrender by Giridhar and his wife could trigger more surrenders in Gadchiroli,” he said. Giridhar surrendered as he felt that the Maoists were losing people’s support. Massive setbacks in Gadchiroli district, and loss of ground in Chhattisgarh also had bearing on Giridhar’s thinking. “Giridhar felt that there was no bright future to the so-called revolution. Hence, he decided to surrender,” said Neelotpal.

Already, the Maoists have been losing their influence in Gadchiroli district and parts of adjoining State of Chhattisgarh. With concerted police action, and boost to development and citizen outreach, the Maoists have been facing difficulties in getting new recruits. Besides, the number of their armed strength in Gadchiroli has been dwindling over the past few years. According to sources, strength of Maoist dalams in Gadchiroli district has come down from 18-20 some 15 years ago, to only four-five formations including Chatgaon-Kasansur and Tippagarh Dalams in North Gadchiroli, Aheri and Gatta Dalams, Company No 10, Bhamragarh Area Committee in South Gadchiroli. Recently, the Perimili Dalam has been wiped out.
