With extreme weather conditions, people are lining up at hospitals and private clinics complaining of wheezing, month-long coughing, headache and fatigue. Doctors estimated the increase in daily influx of such patients at around 40 per cent. Many patients are complaining that their normal cough and cold is taking a month to cure. According to doctors, on an average, out of five, every two people are suffering from cough and cold that is not easily curable. Dr Sumit Bansal from a private clinic in New Market said, “during day hours people are soaking in sweat with extreme humid weather and then they sit in front of AC or cooler. During evening and night hours, temperature is declining with rainfall and this is making people ill.”

Medicine and OPD of government hospitals are flooded with patients suffering from seasonal disease. Doctors said, especially in case of cough, a new trend has been noticed. They said that earlier cough was being easily cured within a week but the latest coughing variant is taking two to three weeks to get cured. Dr Anil Dubey, from private hospital of city said, during rain people should avoid using air conditioner or water coolers as it is giving us internal infection. He said that with weather fluctuation, there is an increase in number of patients coming with complications like cough, cold and fever. Especially in Government hospitals, 70 per cent patients are visiting from the slum areas. According to civil surgeon Dr Rakesh Srivastav, 842 patients contacted with the doctors in JP Hospital on Friday. Most of them were suffering from cold, cough, fever and breathing issues.

If we talk about general days, around 700 to 800 patients visit the OPD every day. For past four days, day temperature in Bhopal is hovering around 37 degrees Celsius and humidity is rising with excessive rainfall in night hours. The combination of cold and humidity is making the people ill. Gandhi Medical College (GMC) saw recorded break number of patients since morning hours. On Friday, around 1,200 patients visited the OPD and 130 visited the doctor with Abha Id. The hospital administration said that for past one week around 1,800 to 2000 patients are visiting every day and out of this 70 percent patients are coming from the slum areas. Dr Rakesh said, during rain diarrhoea and vomiting is very common but month long coughing is the latest trend.
