In last 2-3 years, a sudden boom is seen in emerging branches of technical education. many are inclined to opt for courses like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Sciences etc. This has affected admissions in core engineering branches like Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Chemical, Electronics etc. Taking serious cognisance of the same, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to introduce attractive scheme for students opting for core engineering so that these courses too would be well taken. AICTE will give stipend to the students choosing core engineering branches. Chairman of the AICTE, Prof T G Sitharam, launched the ‘Young Achievers Scholarship and Holistic Academic Skills Venture Initiative’ (YASHASVI) Scheme 2024’ for Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering (CCEEM) degree/diploma students.
Prof Sitharam emphasised the scheme’s goal of promoting core engineering branches, highlighting their pivotal role in the growth of manufacturing industries. He said, “The YASHASVI initiative is designed to support meritorious students pursuing technical education in core branches of engineering. This scholarship aims to encourage talented students to enroll in Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering programs at AICTE approved technical institutions.” According to AICTE, the core engineering sector has to play a major role in the development of India. Core engineering courses have the potential to turn India into a global leader in technology. AICTE is working to strengthen the core engineering courses. The council is taking efforts to boost core engineering education and improve job opportunities for students. The event was also attended by Vice-Chairman Dr Abhay Jere and Member Secretary Prof Rajive Kumar.
Prof Rajendra Kakde, Advisor to Chairman of AICTE, elaborated, “Each year, the scholarship will benefit 5,000 students, with 2,500 scholarships allocated for degree students and 2,500 for diploma students. Degree students will receive Rs 18,000 per year for a maximum of four years, while diploma students will receive Rs 12,000 per year for up to three years. Scholarships will be disbursed directly to students via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).” When asked about the selection criteria of students, Kakde said, “Eligibility for the scholarship is based on merit. For degree level students, selection is based on their 12th grade qualifications, while diploma level students are selected on the basis of their 10th grade marks. To renew the scholarship each year, students must submit their passing certificate/marksheet along with a letter from the Head of their Institution. Applications for the YASHASVI scholarship will be invited once in a year. Eligible candidates are required to apply on-line on National Scholarship Portal (NSP) after initiation of application process.” Students can have more information and application details on the AICTE website.
