Besides, a convergence of opposite winds (shear zone) near Maharashtra is also adding to the monsoon activities in the State. Following the strong weather systems, Jabalpur received 119.6 mm rainfall on Monday. The heavy showers that began on Sunday night continued till 8 in the morning, resulting in water-logging in several areas of the city. The situation was such that water entered people’s homes as well. Meanwhile, Weather Department has issued alert for most of the districts in the State, including Jabalpur. Spokesmen of the Department informed that the spell of heavy rainfall will continue for the next few days. Jabalpur received 119.6 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, adding season’s total rainfall figure to 427.5 mm (16.8 inches). The heavy rainfall created much inconvenience for the denizens of Sanskardhani, on Monday. Residents of Sector D in Dhanvantari Nagar were at the receiving end as their area got water-logged with keen-deep rain water. Area Corporator Jeetu Katare informed that D Sector of Dhanwantari Nagar has been facing water-logging issues for the past 15 years, causing significant distress to the residents. All concerned officials in the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation have been informed about the situation multiple times, but they failed to address the problem.

Even before the rainfall, the issue was brought to the attention of the Municipal Commissioner, but no instructions were given to the subordinate officers to resolve the problem. As a result, when the rain occurred, the entire area experienced heavy waterlogging, making it impossible for people to leave their homes. Katare said the dirty water remains on roads for more than 15 days after each rainfall. The drainage system has been a matter of concern for the past several months, but nobody paid attention to it. Katare said looking to the condition, he along with people of the ward reached sector D and ensured drainage of rain water with the help of JCB machine. Meanwhile, area residents expressing anger towards the situation. They said while the JMC collects taxes for roads and drains every year, the officials never bother to assess the situation during the monsoon season and the problems it creates.

And it happened again! A similar situation occurred two weeks ago when heavy rainfall caused water-logging in most areas of the West Assembly constituency. To assess the situation, State PWD Minister Rakesh Singh had to step onto the flooded roads. Singh had given instructions to the JMC officials to ensure that there are no instances of water-logging in the city and if water accumulates anywhere, it should be drained on time. However, the Municipal Corporation did not take the State Minister’s directives seriously, resulting in the current situation.
