First Indian company to manufacture the 2x25 KV AC traction system transformers

VPESL is the first company in MSME sector to achieve this engineering feat

In a moment of pride for the country and Nagpur in particular, Vishvas Power Engineering Services Limited (VPESL) dispatched first indigenously manufactured two phase transformers for installation over Indian Railway network. The 2x25 KV AC traction system transformers were sent to locations in Bihar and Jharkhand where they would be part of traction power network that is aimed at giving speed to next generation trains of Railways. Based in Butibori, the company’s another achievement is that it is the first in Micro Small Medium Enterprise (MSME) sector to achieve the engineering feat.

A function was held on Monday at the company premises to flag off the two transformers. Satish Aney, Chief Engineer, Maharashtra State Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL); Basudeb Banerjee, Business Head, Railway Electrification Unit, Blue Star; Dr Kishor Malviya, President, Butibori Manufacturers Association (BMA), Vijay Sharma, Chief Manager, Canara Bank; were present for the momentous occasion. Rajiv Bhave, Managing Director, VPESL, Shreyas Bhave and other members of company were present at the function.

The achievement is quite big for the country as Vishvas Power is first Indian company to step into critical manufacturing of specialised transformers, said Shreyas Bhave while listing the details of the 2x25 KV AC transformers. There are others in the manufacturing of specialised transformers but they are all multinational. Therefore for a MSME unit to step into manufacturing of these highest rated transformers for Indian Railways is nothing short of a feat. So far, these two phase transformers used to be imported but now with Vishvas Power India is now self reliant. Explaining the technicalities, Basudeb Banerjee mentioned that with Railways focusing on shifting gears, entering in semi high speed era, these 2 phase transformer are going to play vital role. With the available traction power of 132 MVA, high end propulsion would not be a problem that would enable running trains at 160 km/hr as these 2 phase transformers would enable stable current.

As to 2-phase when a engine needs to accelerate it needs top power so 25+ would enable so and also at that speed stability would not be a problem as the motive power can also downgrade to -25 KV to balance out the speed and variation. Blue Star is one of the leading Indian companies engaged in execution of traction network over Indian Railways and Banerjee said it is proud moment today that an Indian company could successfully fulfill their requirement. Satish Aney said now that Vishvas Power has availed higher 7 rating from Indian Railways, even MSETCL is also looking to partner with the company for their requirement of high power transformers in near future. At the outset Rajiv Bhave thanked the supplier and chiefly Canara Bank, it’s main partner, for keeping in sync with company's growth targets. He traced the journey of the company that started with service jobs to enter into manufacturing segment.
