NMC claims to install tanks soon. Says, for now, citizens can immerse idols at Sonegaon, Gandhi Sagar artificial tanks
WITH the arrival of festive season, the sale of clay and Plaster
of Paris idols is rampant in the
city. As the city is gearing up
to celebrate the Janmashtami
festival on Tuesday, the sale
of Lord Krishna idols is also
in full swing.
However, the immersion of Lord Krishna idols is going to be amatter of huge concern for Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC)as it is yet to install any artificial tank in the city for the purpose.
The civic body is putting emphasis on smooth conduct of theupcoming Ganeshotsav, but it seems to have no plans forJanmashtami, when thousands of small Shri Krishna idols will beimmersed in various water bodies.
On one hand, NMC is appealing to citizens to use artificial tanksfor immersion of Ganesh idols during visarjan, on the other handthe civic body has yet to set up artificial tanks in city before theJanmashtami festival. “We have artificial tanks in Gandhi Sagarlake premises and Sonegaon lake as well. People can immerseidols in these tanks and we will installed more artificial tanks soon,”Dr Gajendra Mahalle, Deputy Commissioner, Solid Waste Deputy Commissioner,
SolidWaste Department told
‘The Hitavada’.
Normally, citizens place
the Lord Krishna idols after
Janmashthami near water
bodies due to ban on idol
immersion in water bodies
and absence of adequate artificial tanks in different parts
of the city. This year also NMC
may have no plans to install
artificial tanks for this festival as the whole machinery
is busy in arrangements of
upcoming Ganesh festival.
To avoid idol immersion in
lakes of the city, NMC barricaded the water bodies with
tin shades. Some lakes also
have artificial tanks but there
is no water available for
immersion so far. The civic
body should fill the tanks
before the festival and install
artificial tanks at different
parts of the city for Lord
Krishna idol immersion.
