Bolt from the Blueis raising alarm in State

Staff Reporter,
The State is witnessing torrential rain along with lighting strikes that is adding to the woes of people.
As per the annual lightning report 2023 based on the observations by Lightning Detection Network (LDN) of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM)/ Ministry of Earth Science (MoES) and National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the country has witnessed continuous rise in lightning strikes. Madhya Pradesh has been most effected with rise in both lightning and mortality.

Further, according to the ranking of the states in the annual lightning report 2021-22 by Climate Resilient Observing Systems Promotion Council (CROPC), Madhya Pradesh emerged the top state with highest lighting strikes.
Ved Prakash, a senior scientist at Indian Meteorological Department, stated that “the lightning cases in the State are higher because the geographical location of the State makes it receive moisture from southwest winds flowing from Arabian sea and southeast winds flowing from Bay of Bengal. Owing to the State receiving more moisture the frequency of thunderstorm in the State exceeds comparatively to the number of thunderstorm days in other states. Another factor is orography in northern part and south-central part of the State. When the winds carrying moisture conflict with the northern or south-central ranges, the districts falling into the periphery of these ranges will receive rainfall and lightning”.

He stated that the incidents of the lightning strike are less comparatively to the deaths being reported.
The scientist highlighted that general warning may not be sufficient and we need prior identification of location and time about lightning.

“General warning may not be sufficient in preventing deaths due to lightning strike. We are working on our two projects that will help in prior generation of location and time specific lightning forecast. The prior prediction with respect to location and time can alerting people and prevent in getting snuff out owing to lightning bolt”
