Regional Centres to be empowered so that issues can be resolved then and there, says Lt Gen Dr Madhuri Kanitkar, Vice-Chancellor of MUHS

Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has proposed a ‘Chakra’ scheme for all the colleges running health sciences courses under it. ‘Chakra’ means wheel, the spokes of which can symbolise various centres of excellence. These centres will take up one subject each and conduct research, study treatment modalities for the diseases under that specialisation, the spread of the field and other aspects. Lt Gen Dr Madhuri Kanitkar, Vice Chancellor of MUHS, in an informal interaction with mediapersons on Thursday, said that the project would bring sea-change in health education. Explaining the concept, Dr Kanitkar said, “MUHS will act as a hub and the 10 centres identified by us will be like the spokes of the wheel. These 10 centres will be developed as one specialisation of the health field.”

Each centre will be given a task of developing one special field. “For example, Nagpur Regional Centre will look after tribal health, our Pune centre will handle mother and child health. In this way we will develop these specialisations. It will not only benefit our students and faculty, but also help in enhancing the quality of treatment,” she said. MUHS has identified five centres at this juncture, which include Nagpur, Pune, Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Kolhapur or Chandrapur. State Government will provide Rs 100 crore for this project, of which Rs 30 crore has been released. This project will be handed over to a company, but it will have Board of Directors from various fields to monitor the progress of the project. A meeting with regard to this project will be held on Friday. This meeting will be attended by Deans of all colleges, officials of the university, Medical Education Commissioner, Director, and Principal Secretary.
