A significant discussion on animal welfare took place on Monday in the Collectorate hall. The meeting was presided over by District Collector Dr Gaurav Singh. The session featured key insights from Ram K Raghuvanshi, a member of the Animal Welfare Board of India, New Delhi. Ram K Raghuvanshi emphasised the importance of focusing on the protection and service of cows, advocating for the breeding of high-yield cows that can produce maximum milk. He suggested the establishment of an animal market dedicated to the purchase and sale of such high breed cows. Collector Dr Gaurav Singh shared that, in line with the Chief Minister’s vision, a cow sanctuary is being planned in the district. This sanctuary will serve as a refuge for stray cattle, with proper arrangements for their fodder.

Dr. Singh also mentioned that an action plan is being developed to establish a high breed animal market in the district. During the meeting, Abinash Mishra, the Municipal Corporation Commissioner, provided details about the Dog Breeding Control Program in the district. He reported that 28,865 dogs have been sterilized over the past five years. In addition, work is progressing rapidly on the construction of a dog shelter house. Ram K. Raghuvanshi commended the district administration’s efforts in this regard. The meeting was attended by CEO District Panchayat Vishwadeep, Joint Director of the Animal Husbandry Department Shankar Lal Uikey, along with other officers and employees.

Quick action gets commendation from ruling party

The quick action by Bilaspur Police, along with the swift legal measures ordered by DM Sharan, has received commendation from ruling party leaders and animal rights advocators. “SP Rajnesh Singh’s zero-tolerance policy, combined with the administration’s firm action through District Magistrate Awanish Kumar Sharan has dealt a heavy blow to cattle smuggling operations in the region,” said Kamal Soni, who is actively associated with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) organization activities in Bilaspur. “Bilaspur SP Rajnesh Singh’s unwavering commitment, along with the district’s decisive actions, has significantly disrupted these cruel operations, protecting countless animals from suffering. These cattle, mostly dairy cows, are often destined for slaughterhouses, making this intervention even more critical in preventing their tragic fate,” stated Dr Kiran Ahuja, Manager of Vegan Projects, PETA India, based in Raipur.
