Water supply hampered in city due to temporary halt in water pumping from Kanhan Dry Well-1. Gates of Totladoh dam, Pench Navegaon Khairy, Khekranala reservoir opened as water level touches danger mark.

For the first time in monsoon this year, all the five major reservoirs of Nagpur district are almost full to the brim following heavy rains in last 48 hours in East Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh (MP). Totladoh dam, the major source to the water demands of Nagpur district, is 99.68% full to its capacity. On Tuesday, Gondia and Bhandara districts witnessed extremely heavy rains which increased the water level in catchment areas of Pench river. Gondia witnessed 306.4 mm rainfall in 36 hours resulting in flood-like situation in the district. Similarly, Bhandara received above 80 mm rains during the period. Heavy rains in the catchment area of Chaurai dam in Madhya Pradesh increased the water level in Totladoh dam. Rains in last 48 hours in Gondia and Bhandara increased the water level further to the danger mark. With water level in dams touching the danger mark, the district administration has decided to open the gates of Totladoh dam on Tuesday.

This led to increase in water level in Pench river. Since September 10 midnight, a gradual rise in the Kanhan river water level has been observed due to continuous heavy rainfall in the upstream catchment areas on September 9 and 10. Additionally, all 16 gates of the Pench Navegaon Khairy reservoir were opened by the administration on Tuesday, further contributing to the increased water flow. Kamthi Khairi dam is completely full and it also releasing water. Similarly, Khindsi dam, Nand dam and Khadgaon dam have also touched the full mark on Wednesday. The administration urged villagers to be alert and to avoid venturing close to any water body amid this situation. The district administration is also alert to avoid any incident due to releasing of water in rivers.

The district administration opened all the four gates of Khekranala dam upto 5 cm after water level crossed danger mark on Tuesday afternoon. On Tuesday, the total water stock in the dam was 22.35 mcum which was 96.87% of the total capacity of the reservoir. Keeping the water level in mind, the administration opened all the four gates and to maintain the normal water level in the reservoir, it has to be kept open till September 15. After opening the gates the excess water started flowing through the spillway and increased the water level in the nearby canals. The administration appealed villagers to avoid venturing near the canal to avoid any untoward incident.
