BHILAI:

Onam, the traditional festival of Kerala, was observed in a simple manner by the Malayali community residing in the twin cities of Bhilai and Durg. The celebrations featured artistic flower arrangements (Athapokallam) and traditional Kerala dishes, adding color and enthusiasm to small family and community gatherings. Held by groups like Bhilai Nair Samajam, Ayyappa Seva Sangham, Bhilai Malayalam Granthasala, and Kerala Samajam, the Onam festivities are usually celebrated with grandeur each year. However, this year, the celebration was toned down due to the devastating floods and landslides that hit Kerala. In solidarity with those affected, the community chose to mark the festival with simplicity. Members of community came together to create vibrant floral patterns (Attappt Athapokallam) and extended their heartfelt Onam greetings to all.

The scene was made even more beautiful by the traditional attire worn by both men and women. Women dressed in elegant white saris, while men wore spotless mundus, reflecting the cultural significance of the occasion. Onam is celebrated to honor the spirit of King Mahabali, who is believed to visit Kerala during the festival. Out of ten days of Onam, first day, Atham, and the tenth day, Thiruvonam, hold the most significance.
