IN THE first-of-its-kind initiative, the Maharashtra Forest
Department has decided to
transfer 15 captive tigers from
Gorewada Rescue Centre,
Nagpur to Greens Zoological,
Rescue and Rehabilitation
Centre in Jamnagar soon.
There are total 29 tigers and
30 leopards in Gorewada Rescue
Centre.The total capacity to keep
captive carnivores in the cages
in Gorewada has already been
exhausted and the rescue centre had no plans to release any
of the tigers into the wild as they
all are either problematic or
injured.
“It is a decongestion process
because the capacity in
Gorewada has already been
exhausted and the Jamnagar
based rescue centre is capable
of keeping the tigers there,” said
Shatnik Bhagwat, Zoo Director.
The rescue centre got green signal from the Central Zoo
Authority (CZA) in the third week
of August for this transfer. “No
exchange of animals will take
place as the tigers are being shifted to another rescue centre. The
process of shifting will take place
in 2-3 days and for this type of
big animal transfer, a team from
Jamnagar rescue centre will
arrive soon with their special
vehicles,” said Bhagwat.
Out of 15 tigers, six are males
and nine females. Among them
three are injured and their treatment is going on in
Gorewada. The team from
Jamnagar will take special
care of these three tigers during transportation, said
the officer.
Maheep Gupta, PCCF
(Wildlife) cleared the transfer of these 15 tigers from
Gorewada just few days ago
ahead of his retirement on
August 31.
However, Ambedkari
Republican Morcha protested against the animal transfer to Jamnagar on Sunday.
According to the organisation, Gorewada Rescue
Centre is a major tourist place
in city and the Forest
Department should keep
them in city
