In a major step towards curbing noise pollution and promoting responsible driving, the Nagpur City Traffic Department, under Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal, Commissioner of Police Nagpur, and Archit Chandak, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), conducted a special campaign against modified silencers on two-wheelers. The campaign took place from January 5 to 9, targeting two-wheelers equipped with illegal after-market silencers causing distress to citizens, particularly senior citizens. “The campaign, initiated after a surge in complaints about the shrill noise caused by these modifications, resulted in the seizure of 440 illegal silencers from local two-wheeler vehicles,” mentioned Dr Singal. The seized illegal silencers were destroyed using a road-roller in the presence of police officials, school students, and citizens at Samvidhan Square on Thursday.

The police officials noted that violators were penalised under Sections 190(2) and 198 of the Motor Vehicles Act, and a total fine of Rs 3,97,050 was recovered from them. Dr Singal said that the involvement of school students in the campaign and during the destroying of illegal silencers was aimed to instill a sense of awareness among youngsters about the consequences of such illegal practices. Chandak mentioned, “Modified silencers were replaced with original ones in the seized vehicles, and similar strict actions would continue against individuals using, manufacturing, and selling modified silencers.” Dr Singal stated that the campaign was not just about penalising offenders but also about addressing the broader issues caused by unnecessary noise. “Excessive noise, whether through modified silencers or unnecessary honking, contributes to stress and anxiety. By reducing noise pollution, we can make driving a more relaxed and safer experience,” he added.
