Deep within the Mahadev Plateau, near the village of Mohndi in Mahasamund district, a mysterious cave known as Baba Kuti has been revealed to outside world, sparking interest among explorers and historians. The region, already known for its natural beauty, now boasts this intriguing site shrouded in local legends. Located approximately 10-12 kilometers from Mahasamund, the cave is a natural rock shelter distinguished by its overhanging rock formation. Measuring roughly 6-7 feet in height and 15-17 feet in width, the entrance is supported by two pillars erected by locals to prevent collapse. Jitendra Nakka, who revealed the mysterious cave to outside world, informed that unlike some other sites in Chhattisgarh, no rock paintings have been found within or around Baba Kuti. However, its unique features and the folklore surrounding it contribute to its significance. Local legends tell of a sage who once resided in the cave, peacefully coexisting with wild animals such as tigers and leopards. Today, the only man-made object inside is a carved image of Lord Hanuman.

 

The cave serves as a site of reverence, particularly during the Chait festival dedicated to Champai Mata, when devotees make pilgrimages to pay their respects. Nakka stated reaching Baba Kuti is no easy feat. A challenging trek through dense forest is required, involving a 4-5 kilometer hike and the crossing of several small hills. The area is rich in wildlife, particularly langurs, adding to the sense of remote wilderness surrounding the cave.

 

This isolation has undoubtedly contributed to the development of the various local legends and beliefs associated with the site. The discovery of Baba Kuti offers a valuable glimpse into the region’s rich history and cultural heritage. While it may lack the rock art found elsewhere in Chhattisgarh, its connection to local folklore and its secluded location make it a significant archaeological find. Authorities and researchers believe that further exploration and research are necessary to fully understand the mysteries and historical significance of this hidden gem within the Mahadev Plateau.
