The Nagpur City and Rural Regional Transport Offices (RTO) took strong action against traffic violations along the Samruddhi Expressway and issued fines to 11,657 drivers for breaking the rules in 2024.
The Nagpur City RTO carried out a large-scale inspection and fined 6,982 vehicles for various violations. The most common violation was riding two-wheelers without helmets, with 2,556 fines issued. An RTO official explained that riding without a helmet is illegal, increasing the risk of serious injuries in case of an accident.
In addition, 146 drivers
were fined for not wearing
seat-belts, and 115 drivers were caught using mobile phones while driving, which can distract drivers and cause accidents. Also, 1,519 cases of over-speeding were detected.
The RTO official warned that speeding on expressways can lead to dangerous crashes, especially when combined with drunk driving. The remaining 2,388 violations included issues like driving in the wrong lane, illegal parking, and other traffic rule violations.
Meanwhile, the Nagpur Rural RTO also conducted its own inspections and issued 4,675 fines for violations. A large number of these fines were for over-speeding, with 673 vehicles caught speeding. The rural RTO also reported 74 instances of wrong lane driving, which can cause dangerous head-on collisions. Additionally, seven drivers were caught drunk driving, a serious violation that puts everyone on the road at risk.
An RTO official said that while the Samruddhi Expressway is a fast and convenient route for travel and used by thousands of vehicles dailty, the large number of violations shows that more attention is needed to ensure road safety.
