Two police constables were suspended after they were caught tying up and beating a youth in Sitabuldi Police Station and demanding a ransom of Rs 5 lakh. The incident, which came to light recently, has damaged the reputation of the City police and led to a loss of public trust.
According to police, the complainant, identified as Cyrus, had gone to Farzi Cafe on West High Court Road with his girlfriend on December 31. After having coffee, they got into an argument. The situation escalated when Cyrus slapped his girlfriend. The woman then filed a complaint at Sitabuldi Police Station and accused Cyrus of beating her.
Woman Police Sub-Inspector Kavita Jagtap started investigating the case and kept the ‘case diary’ in her cupboard at the police station.
However, Constables Praveen Wakode and Samadhan Kamble stole the diary and began investigating the case without permission.
The two constables called Cyrus to the police station under the pretext of questioning him. Once there, they threatened him with serious charges and tied him up with rope. They beat him severely and demanded Rs 5 lakh from him to avoid further punishment. Cyrus refused to pay. In response, the constables beat him again.
Cyrus, upset by the attack, reported the incident to Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Madne.
After an investigation,
it was found that the constables had stolen the ‘case diary’
and used it to carry out illegal actions. CCTV footage also confirmed the beating and the demand for money. As a result, both constables, Praveen Wakode and Samadhan Kamble, were suspended.
